A security and fire alarm system can help keep your family safe in the event of an emergency. However, even with one of our top of the line systems, it is still imperative that your family has a plan for every type of emergency. Planning for such events can be a matter of life or death, in some instances.
There is nothing you can do to prevent a natural disaster, like a hurricane, tornado or earthquake from occurring. The only thing you can do to protect your family is to prepare for that situation to happen.
Prevention/Preparation:
- Know your regional dangers. In the Midwest, we generally don’t need to worry about hurricanes. Tornados, however, are fairly common. As far as earthquakes, many are surprised to learn that we are indeed not that far from a fault line. Don’t count anything out!
- Designate a room or area for your family to go to in the event of a natural disaster. For a tornado or hurricane, the safest place in a house is a basement or cellar. If you don’t have a basement or cellar, a small interior room is best. Somewhere that doesn’t have a wall against the outside of the house. A closet under stairs is the next best solution to a basement.
- Stock your safe room with non-perishable supplies. The essentials should include blankets, flashlights, water and a radio as a bare minimum. You might also want to include food like crackers or pretzels in the event that you are trapped for a long period of time.
- Tell someone else your plan! Whether it is your neighbor or your mother. It would be a good idea to let someone else know where your safe room is just in case you were to get trapped by debris.
- Make sure your family knows all of these plans! In the event that you aren’t home with your family during a natural disaster, everyone needs to know what to do and where to go. You can even be sure of your family’s safety with a Honeywell home connect system installed by Circle City Security and make sure everyone gets to a safe spot.
What to do in the event of a natural disaster:
- If weather seems questionable stay up to date with local and national weather reports. If an evacuation is ordered, do not ignore it! You can replace your possessions but not your life!
- Communicate! It is fairly likely that your entire family might not be together at the time a natural disaster occurs. If weather looks threatening, call your family members, if possible, and make a decision on whether they should get home or stay where they are.
- When weather becomes severe, gather your family and get to your safe room in your basement, cellar or closet. Don’t try to save your possessions; once again they can be replaced! Stay away from windows.
- In the event of an earthquake, you won’t have time to get to a safe room. If possible, get under a sturdy piece of furniture, such as a table, sit cross-legged with your head bent forward and your hands covering the back of your neck.
- If your house or neighborhood becomes flooded, avoid contact with the water at all costs. Floodwaters are many times exposed to electricity and contact could cause fatal shock.
- Stay calm! Panic during a natural disaster is what puts people in danger. Stay calm, get to a safe place and wait it out.
