Prevent Halloween Vandalism: 4 Tips to Protect Your Property

With Halloween approaching avoid toilet paper-filled trees, egging’s, and mailbox-bashing. These are the expensive “tricks” you weren’t expecting during trick or treat season.

That’s not your only concern, either. Burglars often disguise themselves as trick-or-treaters to scope your home.

Here are a few tips to deter vandalism and burglary’s from happening at your home next month.

1) Keep your property well lit

Homeowners usually turn off outdoor lights when they don’t want to give out candy or the homeowners could be out enjoying the night themselves.

Big mistake!!

Pranks are easy to carry out under the cover of night. So turn on your outdoor lights to make it hard for vandals and burglars from sneaking around your home

Instead of keeping lights on, you could install motion sensor floodlights. These turning on automatically when someone approaches your home.

2) Protect your vehicles from vandals by parking in garage

Eggs are a vandal’s choice of weapon during Halloween because of the damage they can cause, especially to your vehicles. Here’s how:

  • When hurled fast enough the eggshell can leave dents and scratches on your car.
  • Egg whites, if allowed to dry, can be incredibly hard to remove without wet sanding and repainting the car.
  • Egg yolks are acidic can eat through your car’s clear coat and stain the surface.

So make sure to park your vehicles in the garage, you’ll give vandals one less tempting target.

3) Don’t forget to lock up tight

After opening your door over and over for trick or treaters, you may get tired of unlocking and locking the door and just leave the door unlocked.

Don’t.

You may forget to lock it at the end of the night. Then you leave yourself wide open to someone getting into your home to cause all sorts of trouble.

Make sure all your doors (even the back door) are locked up tight throughout the night.

3) Give out candy in driveway

Want to get to know your neighbors while deterring vandals at the same time?

We’ve seen some people in our neighborhoods set up a few tables at the driveway and give out candy there instead of having kids come to the door.

Doing this lets you:

  • Reduce traffic on your lawn and flowerbed
  • Keep a watchful eye for vandals, especially those who quickly drive by to knock over the mailbox with a baseball bat
