Summer is Fun For All… Even Criminals

Just about everybody looks forward to the summer. The sun is out, temperatures rise, and people are more willing to go out and partake in activities. I hate to add a downer into how much potential every summer has, but criminals also look forward to the summer months as well. Statistics say the number of break-ins during the summer months increase drastically. Here are a few things to be aware of as we kick summer off.

Out and About

With the kids out of school, you might have more flexibility. More flexibility might mean you are more willing to take a road trip which vacates the house for a number of days. It is important to not post on social media or tell everybody you know about the trip beforehand. If the wrong person gains that information, you could be destined for trouble. Also in the summer, you are more likely to just get out of the house for a number of reasons and watch for it. Criminals are aware of the fact that people will take a walk, head to the park, or other reasons that get you out of the house. Be wary of suspicious cars that are driving around the neighborhood aimlessly. If the car doesn’t look like it belongs, it is probably because it doesn’t.

Open Windows

Another reason criminals are more successful and able to take more chances breaking into homes during the summer months is people tend to leave open windows with higher temperature. It might seem harmless to open a window for the fact that it is so nice outside there is no reason to be relying on heat or air conditioning. Criminals are conscious of this fact and use it to their advantage. Don’t forget to close and lock your windows before going to sleep at night. You don’t want to walk downstairs in the morning to find your television and other valuables vanished, or even worse.

As much as we would like to think the world is filled with only nice people, you have to face reality. The statistics are there and the public is not to be trusted. People will say that would never happen to me until it happens to them. Don’t wait until it happens to you to do something about it.
